Commissioned by Phoenix Vice Mayor, Yassamin Ansari, the mural depicts Mahsa Amini in traditional Kurdish attire. Amini was killed by the Islamic Republic's "morality police" on September 16, 2022, for allegedly breaching their strict dress code for women. Since then, Iranian women and girls have led historic protests across Iran, calling for freedom and equality for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and ethnic and religious minorities. On the top left of the mural, the woman shown cutting her hair is Nasibe Shamsaei, a feminist and former political prisoner.
